Hi, I’m Kate.

I am a Cape Town local, an environmental and communications specialist, and a lifelong explorer of wild spaces. I grew up in Cape Town, studied here, and have lived in several of its neighbourhoods.

This Cape Town travel guide is curated specifically for travelers who want to explore outdoor adventures around the Mother City, learn about what to do and where to go in different areas of the city, and travel more slowly and sustainably across the Western Cape.

If you believe that a day spent connecting with the world’s most spectacular floral kingdom should start with a hike up the mountain, followed by swimming with penguins, and end with sunset views surrounded by nature and a beautifully designed room—you are exactly where you belong.

The Story Behind My Blog

It’s been a long, winding path that led me to start Journey To Cape Town. After finishing school, I set off to work overseas, which sparked a lifelong passion for travel.

Upon returning to South Africa, I chose to follow an intellectual path that paired law with the natural world. I studied to become a lawyer by doing an LLB degree, and later earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Management.

Along the way, I’ve been fortunate enough to have journeyed to 31 countries so far — with a long list of places on my bucketlist that I still want to explore. I’ve done solo travel, backpacking, volunteer travel, luxury travel, student travel, family travel, camping, and even some remote work travel. I’ve also lived and worked in several countries including the UK, USA, Namibia and Tobago.

🌍 From Global Climate Stages to Local Trails

For many years, I worked deeply within the environmental sustainability sector. My career took me across the globe as I: organised massive, high-level international climate change and biodiversity conferences; managed global environmental projects and helped draft international policies; and co-authored strategic environmental publications alongside the United Nations.

Eventually, it was time for a change. I resigned from corporate policy, packed my bags, and spent four months traveling all around South Africa and Eswatini. That transformative trip inspired me to launch Africa’s first online sustainability network.

I also spent many years working as a freelance content writer and content strategist. I authored a series of foundational biodiversity guides for the Canada-based Network for Business Sustainability (NBS), exploring critical global issues including the 5 Main Threats to Biodiversity and how corporate supply chains interact with delicate ecosystems. I also wrote for travel blogs, SaaS websites, a nonprofit tech community, a for-good marketing agency, an ocean conservation organisation, and created over 150+ articles about digital nomads and remote work.

🥾 Returning to the Root of My Passion

Fast forward about 15 years. Following a life-altering experience and years of quiet planning, I finally found the ultimate motivation to live my passion fully and launch Journey To Cape Town.

This space allows me to explore and write about the intricacies of my beautiful home city. More than that, it brings me full circle back into the world of visual storytelling with my Nikon camera (I always knew all those photography courses would come in handy one day!).

When you read my guides, you aren’t just getting a list of locations. You are getting deep research and years of lived experience about local plants, fynbos, wildlife, and delicate ecosystems—alongside guides about accommodation and activites that the Western Cape has to offer.
